The Glorious Storage Scavenger Hunt

The three sisters stood silently in their mother’s living room, hands on their hips, and expressions of alarm on their faces as their eyes scanned the room. The oldest, Jenna, voiced what everyone was thinking. “What are we going to do with all this stuff?” Their mother had been a collector of – well – everything, it seemed. The bookshelves were overflowing with a whole range of titles. There were books about Miami, Florida, storage facilities for goodness sake!

“Looks like Mom was set on starting her own self storage facility,” said the middle sister, Deanna. “Why did she need six lamps for her living room?” “Who knows,” exclaimed the youngest, Becky. “I hope she’s not included them in her Will. They’re ugly.” As the youngest child and quite stubborn, Becky was well-known for her bluntness and had never been one to beat around the bush.

All three sisters were due to meet with the lawyer at 2 o’clock that afternoon. After what felt like an eternity of sorting through piles of books, doilies and an old hatbox of what appeared to be a collection of wigs – 2 o’clock rolled around and the sisters headed down the street to the office.

“Well ladies,” Mr. Sawyer grinned as he opened their mother’s Will. “You three are in for quite a treat.” “What do you mean,” asked Jenna nervously, as she shot glances at her sisters. Mr. Sawyer chuckled. “Your mother knew you girls better than you realize. She told me from the start that you wouldn’t want any of her collections. She barely bought anything in that house – most of them were gifts and she just didn’t have the heart to give anything away. She has instructed that everything in the house be donated to the Goodwill down the road. The only other item she left me was this key.”

“A key!” all three girls exclaimed. “What’s it for?” Becky said, leaning forward. “Well,” replied Mr. Sawyer, “all she told me was to give you the key and send you to this address. Excitedly, the sisters grabbed the key and hurried out the door. “Oh, this reminds me of when we were kids and Mom used to hide treats for us and send us off on a scavenger hunt, exclaimed Deanna.

Before long, the sisters found themselves in front of a very large building. The sign in the parking lot said, “The Best Miami, Florida, storage facility in town!” The girls hurried into the office, explained what they were there for and were directed down a long row of bright orange storage units until they reached Unit C425. They could hardly contain their excitement. Jenna was the first one to walk through the door. Inside the unit were two boxes and one envelope.
The first box had “Becky – to be opened first” printed in large bold letters across it. “Wow, Mom sure knows my impatient nature,” laughed Becky. Pulling back the corners, she shrieked with delight. “What is it?” the other two cried. “It’s all of my old riding equipment,” Becky exclaimed. “My saddle, my bridles, everything. Oh and there's a note here too.” Her eyes scanned it feverishly. “Oh my goodness – ever since we lost the farm, Mom has been saving money to buy back my equipment!”

As Becky continued rifling through her gift, Deanna stepped up to open the second box – titled “To Deanna – with love.” Inside the box was a hard case with a familiar shape. With trembling fingers, Deanna opened the case to reveal a beautiful violin. “Ohh,” said Deanna softly. Her mother’s note explained that she had always admiration Deanna’s willingness to sell her violin to help out the family and Deanna’s mother had been searching for the perfect replacement ever since. 
With the two younger sisters engrossed in their gifts, Jenna bent down and picked up the envelope. Inside was a property title for the house and a note that said, “Jenna, of all my girls, you have always been the one who I knew would want this house. I know that you and Jim have wanted your own house for some time now. So it is my gift to you.” As Jenna read her mother’s note, a tear rolled down her face. She felt an arm encircle her waist and then another one, and looked down to see both sisters smiling up at her,  with mixed expressions of sadness and appreciation for their mother who knew them so well. She was truly an amazing woman.
